Constitution of Case Animal Rights & Ethics Society Case Western Reserve University
ARTICLE I – NAME Section 1. The name of this organization shall be Case Animal Rights & Ethics Society hereafter referred to as CARES. Section 2. This organization will use its name or its acronym, CARES, in all publicity materials and correspondence.
ARTICLE II – PURPOSE Section 1. The purpose of this organization is to spread awareness about animal welfare, raise money, and promote animal related community service and philanthropy.
ARTICLE III – MEMBERSHIP Section 1. This organization will consist of officers and general members. All currently enrolled full-time and part-time Case students, both undergraduate and graduate, are eligible to be members. Section 2. All members are eligible to attend all meetings and events of this organization except for executive specific meetings. Section 3. All members are required to demonstrate support for the purpose of this organization. Section 4. Membership may be revoked by the club president or the teacher advisor due to failure to adhere to the requirements for membership as stated above or to university and/or housing policies. Section 5. Membership is open to any Case student regardless of age, race, religion or creed, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability, or sexual orientation.
ARTICLE IV – MEETINGS Section 1. Regular meetings will be held every week. Members are asked to attend at least one meeting per month. Section 2. Officers are expected to hold weekly meetings to discuss philanthropy and business. Section 2. Meetings may be cancelled according to the discretion of the president at least 12 hours in advance of the meeting. Section 3. To conduct business at any meeting, all officers must be present.
ARTICLE V – OFFICERS Section 1. The organization shall have the following officer positions: President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Section 2. The President will chair all meetings of CARES, and call special meetings as needed. Section 3. The Vice President shall chair meetings in the absence of the President Section 4. The Secretary will take record, and file meetings minutes as well as produce all official correspondence for the organization. Section 5. The Treasure will maintain records and report on the financial transactions of CARES. Section 6. All officers are responsible for coordinating and organizing events and advertising meetings. Section 7. All officers are expected to attend the weekly executive meetings and all the general member meetings unless they give prior notice. Section 8. Nominations for officer positions will be accepted a month before the elections during weekly meetings. Any member can only nominate himself or herself. Section 9. Elections for office positions must be held every year in April. A simple majority vote will be sufficient to elect an officer. If there are more than two candidates and no candidate receives a majority, there will be a run-off vote between the top two vote recipients in the general meeting. Section 10. Officers may be removed from office for failure to perform duties or for violation of membership clause. A majority vote of members present at a regularly scheduled meeting and unanimous consent of other officers shall be sufficient for removal from office. Section 11. Should a vacancy in office occur, there will be another nomination procedure and election for the vacant office held as soon as possible.
ARTICLE VI – BY-LAWS Section 1. By-laws can be added to this constitution by a simple majority vote of the entire membership at a regular meeting of CARES. Section 2. This constitution takes precedence over any and all by-laws.
ARTICLE VII – AMENDMENTS Section 1. This constitution can be amended by a two-thirds vote of the entire membership at a regular meeting of CARES and a unanimous vote by the officers. Section 2. Notification of such a motion must be made to members at least one meeting in advance of the one in which the actual vote is taken. |
